The Thing

Se acerca el día de los muertos y con él llegan varios estrenos de cine pensados para aterrorizarnos. Entre ellos encontramos The Thing  (Matthijs van Heijningnen Jr). El argumento nos traslada a la Antártida, donde un grupo de científicos encuentra en estado de congelación una extraña criatura. La película es una reinterpretación de The Thing (La cosa, el enigma de otro mundo) dirigida con maestría en 1982 por John Carpenter. Recuerdo haber visto por primera vez esta versión con tan sólo ocho o nueve años en un cine de verano, de noche, al aire libre y sentada en una incómoda silla de metal. Creo que aquella fue mi primera experiencia terrorífica (en dura competencia con la bruja de Blancanieves de Disney y cuando me   sentaron en el regazo de un rey mago). Con Kurt Russell como protagonista y el genial Ennio Morricone a cargo de la música, la película logra trasladarnos a la oscuridad gélida de una base científica aislada y con escasos recursos para hacer frente a la criatura más inquietante jamás vista. Al contrario que esta última versión, Carpenter no necesita abusar de efectos especiales para meternos el miedo en el cuerpo.

La película de Carpenter es a su vez un remake del clásico de terror The thing from another world, producida en 1951 por Howard Hawks y que recrea el fantástico argumento con geniales interpretaciones y escenas inquietantes. Os ayudo a elegir vuestra versión con algunos trailers.

With Halloween approaching several new movies designed to terrorized us are being released. Amongst them, we have The Thing (Matthijs van Heijningnen Jr).  The plot takes us to Antarctica where a group of scientists find a strange creature in frozen state.  The film is a remake of The Thing (The thing, the mystery of another world) directed in 1982 by John Carpenter. I remember having seen this movie when I was just eight or nine years old at an outdoor summer movie theater, at night, sitting on an uncomfortable cold metal chair.  I think that was my first terrifying experience (in tight competition with the wicked witch from Disney's Snow White - and when I was sat on the lap of one of the Three Wise Men).  With Kurt Russell as the leading actor and the wonderful Enrio Morricone in charge of the music, the movie takes us to the darkness of an isolated and cold scientific base with limited resources  to face the most troubling creature ever seen.   Unlike this new version, Carpenter doesn't need to use too many special effects to really frighten us.

Carpenter's movie is, in turn, a remake of the classic terror movie The Thing form Another World, produced in 1951 by Howard Hawks, which recreates this excellent plot with outstanding performances and disturbing scenes. I will help you choose your version with some trailers.
